And yes, you heard right. A free iPad. But you do realize there's always a catch to these things, right? It's not like Apple is handing them out to the first 3,000 people that buy their stock or anything.
After receiving a flyer from one of our local car dealerships that stated my 2000 Xterra could be worth $5,450, and that I may have won a brand new car with the winning number on my flyer, and that I would receive a free iPad with purchase, I wondered if that meant I could go into their dealership, buy an oil change, or maybe purchase something out of their vending machines and get a free iPad, and maybe even win a new car. (Well, it does say free iPad with purchase... Nowhere on that flyer does it say that I would have to purchase a car to get one. So doesn't buying a candy bar count? That's a purchase, right?). It also made me wonder who else was giving iPad's away so freely. So I did a bit of research and here's what I found:

Free iPad Offer Scams- Beware of the Personal Information Scam
"Those are just a few of the "sponsored offer" advertisements. A surefire sign that an iPad free giveaway is a scam is if they ask you to give any sort of payment information, or bank account information. Legit giveaways will never ask you for this kind of information - they want your contacts, not your money. And if you do give away any of your personal or financial information, then you'll still receive your iPad - you'll just pay for it, along with shipping and handling charges, taxes, and any extras that the scamming company decides to tack on, which you can be sure will be quite a bit."
Facebook Free iPad Scams
It could also be a scam such as the Facebook free iPad scams happening all over Facebook. Read about how the scams work at Naked Security here. http://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2010/03/01/free-facebook-ipad-betatest-offer-scam/
After reading all of that, it's made me feel pretty bold, and everyone seems to be getting a free iPad, so why can't I? I may just try going down to my local dealership with that flyer and see if I can get myself a free iPad by purchasing a Snickers out of thier vending machine, and then throwing a fit scaring away all their customers until they hand over the free iPad...hey, it's only fair, right?

Post a CommentI want a free iPad. I don't want to fulfill any offers or complete or buy anything. Just a free iPad, that's all. I'm not asking for too much am I?
If you're going to throw a tantrum in the dealership I have got to come along...this is going to be good!
Great info but I just spent 10 minutes signing in to leave a comment so hopefully it will be back to normal soon.
Very good! and I always click on the "I like this' to give extra page views!
definitely something to be aware of, many of the "offers" will charge your card or bank every month for a service you didn't want or didn't recieve. Very timely article, thanks for the info
Hmmm. From what some of my onlien friends tell me about their iPads, even free is paying too much :-)
I want one!

You can never get something for nothing, though often you can get nothing for something.
I bet you're getting a lot of hits on this article. Very hot topic!
