Where to Look for a Free Kitten

Do you want a kitten but don't really want to buy one from an expensive breeder or get one from an animal shelter or humane society? Let's face it. Some people just don't want to pay almost $100 for a kitten from the humane society or even $40 from an animal shelter. Kittens are everywhere; you just have to know where to find them without going to all the usual sources. If you're one of those people who'd rather have a free kitten, here's where you can find them.

Craigslist. Surprisingly, craigslist.com is a very good place to find free pets. Many people will post their pets on Craigslist rather than run them in the newspaper because Craigslist is free, whereas the local newspaper is not. You can search for kittens in your area, state, or even bordering states, depending upon how far you are willing to travel for your new kitten. However, you need to be on the alert for spam and scammers on online listings.Local Newspapers. Local newspapers are one of the oldest ways of finding free pets, and it is often a very effective way. Plus, chances are since the owner was willing to pay for the listing in the paper, they have taken good care of the kitten and want it to go to a good home. You can also check any specialty papers that feature only or mostly classified ads as these will most likely contain more free kittens ads. For instance, one such paper in Florida is the Florida Pennysaver, which prints an issue for several different counties around Daytona Beach. This paper almost always has free kitten listings in it every week.

Local Grocery Stores. Many people give away kittens outside of local stores, including grocery stores and sometimes even local Wal-Marts. If your town has a flea market, these are also places where people give away free kittens. However, these are hit-and-miss methods of acquiring a kitten because sometimes there will be give-aways and sometimes there won't. However, many local stores have bulletin board listings posted by the entryway so you can check there. Many people post fliers and ads for free kittens on these local bulletin boards.

Acquaintances. Ask around for a kitten. Ask people you know, friends from work, church, school, or just acquaintances from the supermarket if they know anybody whose trying to give away some kittens. A lot of people's cats have kittens and they just give them away by word-of-mouth rather than advertising. So if you inquire, you just might get lucky.

All of these are ways that you can eventually find a free kitten. Granted, if you are looking for a free kitten, sometimes you have to be patient as free kittens are hard to come by in some areas. But hang in there and you'll find one sooner or later!
