How to Use Fresh Flowers to Make Floral Arrangements

Brenda Hoffman
Flowers make a beautiful, colorful addition to any home, which is why you probably want to know how to make floral designs with fresh flowers. While you may think that you would need to have some training in order to make floral designs with fresh flowers, this isn't true at all. You simply need to have some imagination and the ability to follow some simple instructions.

What You Will Need To Make Floral Designs With Fresh Flowers

You will need to have the following items in order to make floral designs with fresh flowers:

- Between 12 to 24 fresh flowers
- Some unusual dishes or bowls
- Floral foam
- Cutting board
- Knife

Choose Your Container

Choose the type of container that you want to use for your arrangement. You can use some unusual containers such as a clear vase with colored stones in the bottom; a decorative coffee can; baskets; a pretty pitcher; a teacup or mug.

Working With Your Floral Foam

Use a cutting board and a knife to cut your floral foam so that it will fit the container that you are using. Soak your floral foam in water for a few minutes so that it soaks up some water.

Cut Your Flowers

Cut your flowers so that they will fit into your container. Check to ensure that they are the right size by holding them up to the outside of the container before you cut them. You will want to make sure that they are cut at different size in order to allow for some variation. Now cut the stems at an angle. This will help your flowers absorb water better. Arrange Your Flowers

Arrange your flowers in the container of your choice. Put the flowers in the container one at a time. Layer the stems on top of each other at an angle so that they are more secure. Make sure the flowers are even on every side. You will also want to make sure that they are evenly spaced according to size.

Add Water To Your Container

You will want to fill your container ¾ full of water. Use a flower preservative so that the flowers will last longer. This preservative should be added to the water before you add the flowers.

A Final Word On Making Floral Designs With Fresh Flowers

While the aforementioned tips may sound somewhat daunting, they don't have to be. The main thing is to have fun and use your imagination. You may be surprised by what you come up with.
