Spanglish is based on the concept of speed dating. But don't worry it is not a dating service; it is simply a way to make friends and practice Spanish while you are in Buenos Aires. Spanglish meets at different bars around Buenos Aires. Spanglish starts at seven o'clock and ends at nine o'clock, which gives you two hours to practice Spanish (and make friends).
When you enter a Spanglish event you will be greeted by someone who speaks both Spanish and English. Usually they are wearing a name tag and carrying a clipboard. Talk to this person to sign in so you can participate in that evenings festivity. The will ask for your email address and your name. You will be given a name tag, which makes it easier to make friends.
The price for Spanglish is fifteen pesos and you get a free drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). Fifteen pesos is quite reasonable because a pint of beer in Buenos Aires usually costs that much anyway (at a bar). You will also be assigned a table to begin your evening. Like I said it is like speed dating so you will have a chance to speak with many people.
At each table there will be one or two native Spanish speakers who are there to practice English and one or two English speakers who are there to practice Spanish. You sit at the table for ten minutes total. The first five minutes you practice Spanish and the second five minutes you practice English. The people from Spanglish do the timing and alert you when to switch languages. When the ten minutes is up you switch tables and do it all over again until the event is over.
I think it is a lot of fun and a good opportunity to make friends and meet new people in Buenos Aires. The ten minutes passes very quickly but does give you time to practice Spanish. And because you interact with many different people a variety of subjects will come up and give you an opportunity to use different vocabulary.
If you are going to be in Buenos Aires either long or short term you should go check it out. It's a lot of fun. You can find the Spanglish schedule by joining their facebook group or by going to their website.
