How to Make a Frugally Minimalist Gnat Trap

Annie Jean Brewer
Gnats are an incredible annoyance. Bring in some fruit (bananas seem to be a gnat magnet) or have some sour drains and these critters just seem to appear out of nowhere. Earlier this year I visited a friend of mine who was ready to burn his house to the ground because of this tiny menace. He was spraying like crazy and they just kept multiplying!

I laughed at him then and Karma decided to return the favor. I ended up with my own batch of tiny gnats.

There is a solution to this little menace, one that doesn't involve sprays or burning your home to the ground.

Things Needed:
Jar with lid
Apple Cider Vinegar (regular vinegar will work, too)
Spoon of sugar

Step One:
Take the jar and punch some holes in the lid. A wide-mouth jar is the best; my jar is a repurposed salsa jar. Make sure the holes are larger than the gnats or you will defeat the purpose!

Step Two:
Place approximately 1-inch of Apple Cider Vinegar in the bottom, and mix in the spoon of sugar.

Step Three:
Put the lid on the jar, and put in a place where the gnats are bugging you. I advise against sitting it on a counter because wherever you place this the gnats will congregate.

The gnats will be attracted to the smell, crawl in the holes and be unable to get out. The will tire and drown in the liquid.

Every few days replace the vinegar and sugar mix in the trap.

Alternative:
Take one of those little microwave containers that have the lid with the little holes and wash it well.

Place a fruit peel or a piece of banana within the container and place the lid on top.

After a few days, tape the holes shut and toss the container. If you open it the gnats will fly right out, so don't recycle this.

Enjoy your gnat-free home!
