How to Frugally Spice Up Your Boring Meals

Cee Belair
You might be broke, or on a budget and tired of eating the same old thing day after day.

Want to add a little spice to your boring meals? Here are some tips for flavoring your food with everyday household items.

Salt:

Salt can make anything taste better. If you have high blood pressure though, run it by your doctor before you starting adding exuberant amounts of salt in your diet. Add salt to just about anything, from meat to vegetables to add a little life to it.

Pepper:

There are several different kinds of pepper, depending on how spicy you might like your food. Even table pepper can be a welcome addition to foods like casseroles or tuna fish sandwiches.

You can even cook with pepper, add some to a little butter or oil in your saucepan and sauté it to add an extra flavor.

Nutmeg:

Nutmeg is commonly used for the Fall season's famous pumpkin pies and breads. You can also use it to anything that is made with beef, such as a roast or beef stew. For a little life, add it to your boring mashed potatoes as well.

Sugar:

Sugar is used in cooking to take away the bitter tastes in some foods. Add some to your tomato soup, or spaghetti sauce to give it a milder flavor.

Vinegar:

There never seems to be an end for the uses of vinegar! For cooking, you can use it anywhere from salad dressings to eggs. You can also put it on strawberries to bring out the flavor!

Lemon:

The most common use for lemons, besides lemonade, is on fish. You can squeeze the juice out onto your fish meal, or even add it to a salad.

Apple Juice:

You can use apple juice in replacement of plain, old water in just about any instance. If your recipe calls for water, just substitute some apple juice and it will bring a great new flavor to just about anything.

Mayonnaise:

You can use mayonnaise in place of butter or olive oil if you're baking a chicken.

Vanilla:

This is one of my favorites for the frugal kitchen. You can add vanilla to just about any baked good to make your food taste better.

You don't have to spend over your budget on fancy herbs and spices to make your food taste a little better. Try some of these to your normal, boring meals and you'll be surprised at the difference they'll make!

Good and interesting info. I think the only thing that would spice up my food is having someone else cook it for me, lol.
