How To Have Fun Shopping With Children

It's Not that Bad, Really!

Cheryl Loux
You run from store to store. You get in and out of the car. Shopping is hectic. Now add shopping with children to the mix. Everything becomes much more hectic. Shopping with children may not seem like fun. But, following these simple steps will ensure a more pleasant shopping experience with your children.

Go to Bed Early

Get your kids and yourself to bed early. Start the day refreshed and energized. From experience, I know this keeps irritability for everyone at bay.

Prepare, Prepare, Prepare

Shopping with children means to be prepared. Have breakfast. Pack snacks and/or lunch for the kids and yourself. Prepare a list of stores you wish to patron. Also prepare a list of things you want to purchase. Have a back up list. My nerves have been frazzled many times when I had to choose another item because the original one was not available.

Pick out clothes to wear the night before. If you need to pack a diaper bag, here are some suggestions of what to pack it with: diapers and wipes (obviously), sippy cup with water or juice, baby snacks, a favorite toy, a change of clothes, and a baby blanket. I like to bring along anti-bacterial wipes as well.

When shopping with older children, you can bring along a small backpack instead of a diaper bag. My suggested items for a backpack: anti-bacterial wipes, bottled water, jackets (depending on the weather), a book and/or notepad and pencil, and a snack.

Know what you will eat for breakfast. Keep breakfast simple. Fix bowls of cereal or toast frozen waffles.

Gas up your car the night before. Put the packed diaper bag or backpack in the car the night before too.

Check Your Attitude

If you start your shopping day with a negative attitude, you better believe somebody, somebody's children, and/or some situation is going to work your last nerve.

If you're happy, your children will be happy. In my experience, if I'm in a good mood, my children are in a good mood. They behave better when we're in the store.

Have a positive attitude. It will carry a long way and bring you good energy. In the event you run into a negative situation, you will handle it that much better. You will also set a good example for your children if you handle a rude person in a positive manner.

Watch for Cues

Another suggestion to insure a good experience shopping with children is to watch for signs from your kids.

You are in your shopping grove. You and your kids have gone to several stores now. You are almost done. You just have a couple of more places to squeeze in. Your kids, however, start to fight with each other. They begin to misbehave and whine. These are classic cues of exhausted little children.

When you see these signs, it's time to go home. What ever you didn't get finished can wait for another day.

Let Them Have Some Fun

If your children are cooperating well, reward them. Shopping with children doesn't have to be all business. Take a moment to relax.

Most shopping malls today have play areas. Utilize the play area. You can sit down and take a load off while your children get to release some pent up energy. This is a welcome break from going in and out of stores.

Spread Out Shopping Time

It is quite a task to complete your shopping all in one day with young children in tow. There's no rule against spreading your shopping tasks over a couple of days. Avoid tantrums from your kids. Resist the urge to pull out your hair. Shop for two to three hours one day and do the same the next.

Shopping with children doesn't have to be a dreadful situation. Plan it right and you can have lots of fun and get the job done. And remember, there is always the internet.

Cheryl, good lesson. Being in a hurry with the kids is always tough and can result in conflict or pushing them.

I don't have kids. But I have seen some parents resorting to whipping their kids around with those leashes. I always think those things look funny.

I'm glad I got a chance to see this one. I think you are so right about attitude. Kids pick up on that and reflect their parents' take on things. I try to stay positive when taking the kids shopping. Does it always prevent a meltdown? Nope, but it helps :)

The hardest part of shopping with kids is shopping itself....hate it. Good tips. Especially taking a few minutes out. It puts everything in prospective and makes everyone a little happier.
