How to Have Fun in Vegas and Stay Off of the Strip

Theres so Much More to Vegas Than the Night Life

Sin city, what happens here stays here. It's not because your friends can keep secrets; it's because you were all blacked out. When most people think of Vegas they think of the biggest rage they've have ever seen; complete with bright lights, risqué behavior, and more alcohol than you could ever drink. When locals think of Las Vegas we think of Red Rock, Lake Mead and the other naturally beautiful places to visit that are just outside the city.

Twenty minutes west of the city is Red Rock canyon. Within this expansive valley there are breathtaking views, a scenic drive, and paths that are suited for the beginning hiker or expert rock climber. It's a great place to bring kids and pets to spend some quality time together. Anytime someone comes to visit me in Las Vegas, I always try to get them out for a little fresh air and a break from all the hustle and bustle of the strip.

Lake Mead is also extremely close, about thirty minutes from the strip, and a big relief from the summer heat. This is where locals bring their boats and jet skis or just themselves to cool off and hang out. In many places, like Nelson's landing, fifteen to twenty foot cliffs offer an amazing place for cliff jumping. If you're more into just taking it easy, there are so many "beaches" you can usually find a nice empty shore to set up your beach chair and relax the day away.

If you're interested in escaping the heat of the desert, Mt. Charleston is a lovely retreat. You can enjoy the mountains shade while admiring the abundant flora and fauna of the area. Seemingly untouched by the nearby "sin" you can get a suite at one of the lodges and pretend you're in the Rockies on a cold winter's night. During the winter Mt. Charleston is a popular place for skiers and snowboarders.

Wherever you decide to go remember that you can't always judge a book by its cover; and you can't judge a city by its slogan. There is much more to southern Nevada than casinos and sequins. You just have to embrace your sense of adventure and drive a little to find it.

I'm going to teach all over the world. I want to experience the things that other people just dream about. I want to see the wonders of man and of nature. I will learn something new everyday. I'll do it all...  View profile
