How to Be Funny: Making it Past the Audition in Last Comic Standing

I am not a professional comedian of any sort. However, after watching four seasons of Last Comic Standing, neither are most of the people who try out for the show. Every year, I see people make the same mistakes season after season, and never make it past the audition phase. So, if you ever have it planned that you want to try out for the show, here's some things to keep in mind:

Gimmicks do not work- I will admit that there have been a couple of interesting gimmicks that have been tried this season, most memorable being the ventriloquist using her dog as the dummy. There is also a special place in my heart for the robot from the future who was telling jokes. However, as interesting as I find them being, the judges do not find any of the gimmicks being a perfect fit. So, before you dress up as a clown (apparently this is a favorite thing for people to dress up as in New York City), put the nose and the wig away and just stay home.

Ethnic/racist humor may work in bars, but not for the judges- Last night's episode was a prime example of this rule. Anti-Semitic humor, although it may be funny in your local bar, do not go over well with the judges. This is especially true if one of the judges is Jewish. Poking fun at stereotypes, however, is a better way to go. For instance, talking about why a white person crosses the street when they see a black person only to find out it's their boyfriend works better than talking about a jewish face.

Save some of your best wit for after your routine- If you don't happen to have your best material, be ready to have some witty comebacks to help sway the judges to keep you in for the talent night. Being a stand up comic requires you to be quick on your feet, so even if you don't have your best material, being able to have a comeback for the judges can go a long way to show your potential.

Don't take the stage naked- This is especially true if you are performing in the far north of the United States. 'Nuff said.

These are some basic steps. Following these items, you will have a better chance to make it through to audition phase then you may have had before. Of course, if you don't, then I am not responsible. Maybe you should just look at your material. If you do happen to make it, dedicate a performance to me.
