How to Gain the Competitive Edge

How to Make Your Business Stand Out from the Crowd

L J Pearce
Being in business is one thing, but being a successful, and competitive business is another. SO how do you gain that competitive edge and stand out from the crowd: here are a few tips, ideas and ways:

1. Make sure all your staff and employees are trained and treated the way you would like to be treated if you were an employee. Treating staff well and training them well means you will be more likely to retain them - saving you staff costs, and you will more likely have them singing your praises = free advertising, marketing and promotion.

2. Differentiate. Differentiate your sales approach, your business model, your line of products or services that you are making or selling. Being different will help to get noticed.

3. Offer excellent customer service for free. Every customer or potential customer likes being treated like a king or queen especially when they are parting with their hard earned cash so treat them like one.

4. Build a solid reputation. Get networking, get to know other people and other businesses, build up a brand, build up something that you will be remembered by and instantly recognised by.

5. Keep it fresh. By this I mean keep your products, lines, services and so on fresh, don't change them so often that people don't know what your offering, but change them so that people know you will stock, sell or offer something different to the rest.

6. Check out your competition and competitors, see what they are offering, and what they are not offering. Stay ahead of the game and keep on top of what they are doing - don't copy or just try an compete on price or this will lead to price wars- instead try and do something to gain a competitive edge.

7. Plan for change. Put together a kind of business plan, for more of a plan for change, this will ensure that your business does not stay stale and uninteresting/unappealing.

8. Use the media and press and get them on your side. Always use and type of media and press that you can get your hands on, remember that no publicity is bad. Send out press releases, news releases and anything else to get the press and media on your side. Building and keeping a positive strong image within the press and media, be it local or regional will help you gain the competitive edge over your competitors.
