How I Game for Free - The Best Free MMOs

Lisa Mason
I have always loved MMOs. In fact, I was a diehard "Conquer" fan basically since it came out and when "World of Warcraft" was first released, I played in windowed mode so I could log over and check my characters in "Conquer".

While I still play "WoW", six years later, there have been few other games I have actually wanted to play. I bought "Guild Wars" which has no monthly subscription fees so other than purchasing the game, it is free. But I also found it got boring after awhile. You need to be in a good, active guild to get much out of it.

There are now more MMORPGs in the market than ever before so it can be overwhelming for the gamer looking to game for free to choose which ones to take the time (and computer space) to download. But I've found some great completely free-to-play MMOs that any game lover should check out.

After trying thousands- literally- of free to play MMOs, here are my top picks for playability and quality:

"Fiesta Online" - This is a great 3-D fantasy MMORPG from Outspark that's free to download and free to play. It has fun, cell-shaded graphics in an anime-inspired theme. If you love the cartoony-look of an MMO, then this one is for you. There are five great classes to choose from and a good back story. The music is also fun and entertaining. The world is as vibrant and upbeat as the name of the game itself. Can we say mushroom houses, anyone? It also has all the good stuff you want from an MMO- PVP, battlefield mode, instance dungeon and kingdom quests.

"Runes of Magic" - Inspired by the very popular "World of Warcraft", but available for free, Runes of Magic has beautiful graphics, hundreds of quests and an interesting dual-class system to keep you entertained for a long time. RoM is free to download and free to play. It features regular updates with new content, e.g. classes, races, game modes and much more. I first started playing it about 3 years ago and I go back to it often when I need a break from something else. There are loads of quests, PVP options, and various unique mounts and more.

"Conquer Online"- "ConquerOnline" is a leading free Kung Fu MMORPG developed by renowned Chinese- based online games publisher TQ Digital Entertainment. The game has experienced many upgrades and additions over the years making it well worth checking out again if you played it in the past and maybe gave it up. Players can choose from six great classes with unique abilities, 18 different styles of weapons, 20 features systems and 140 different levels with the rebirth systems. "Conquer" features gamers from more than 100 different countries and the once-small community has grown but still seems tight-knit.

"DOFUS" - Over 25 million players are enjoying DOFUS, the colorful and enchanted universe based around a fantastic storyline involving dragons and a very special hero. This f2p MMO has a great back-story involving heroes and dragons- who wouldn't love it? It's the number one MMORPG in France but it also has a large US player base today. There is so much to do that you can literally get years of game play from "DOFUS" without spending a dime.

I played a ton of MMOs, both free and subscription-based. I'm just not a fan at all of free-to-play ones. The lack of polish and the accompanying grind most of them have is just a deal-breaker for me.
