How to Make a Garden Craft That's Picture Perfect

Mary Drew
Everybody has old picture frames that are missing the glass or backs. This gardening craft project is a great way to recycle old picture frames and to spend some time together. This is a great family project and really will showcase your climbing type of plants and also giving them stake support. Check out these easy steps to create your own picture perfect garden.

What you will need:

Recycled picture frame with no glass or back (8 by 10 or larger works really well)

Safety glasses and Gloves

A couple of 1 1/4 inch wire brads

Wooden garden stake

Hammer

Paint and desired colors

Paint brushes

Sealer (top coat)

Step One: Figure out which plants and flowers you would like to display as still life art while there growing, (Sunflowers work really well and look great but any tall and/or climbing plant looks good) then gather up all you supplies.

Step Two: Put on some safety glasses and some gloves (gardening gloves are fine). It's very important to protect your hands and eyes with the appropriate safety wear during any projects.

Step Three: Nail the back of the recycled picture frame to a garden stake with the wire brads. You will want to make sure and use a few wire brads so it is sturdy. (I even use a little wood glue on the stake before I nail my frame just for extra support.)

Step Four: Paint the wood garden stake and recycled picture frame, in any desired color or colors. This is the part of the family craft project that the kids enjoy the most and where they get to be so creative. Because my garden is a family project the kids like to make these frames and stakes very colorful.

Step Five: Coat the completely dry painted stake and recycled frame with a top coat of sealer. This is a totally optional step; I do it to keep my frames looking good and lasting all season long.

Step Six: Hammer the stake with the recycled picture frame into the ground gentle. The staked picture frame should line up with the plant or flower and you should have a visual still life portrait of your plant.

My daughters and I make a couple of these each gardening season as a fun family gardening project. We put them up around our tomatoes and sunflowers and it's so much fun to see what still life art will be displayed in are garden. It's a hit with all our neighbors and guest, everyone who sees them love's them and wants one for their own garden. Give this recycled picture frame craft a try, your sure to love it all season!
