How Does a New Exhaust System Help a Vehicle To Consume Less Gas?
The main thing that a new exhaust system will do is reduce the restrictiveness of the narrow factory exhausts. Vehicles with standard equipped exhausts tend to be restrictive to the flow of the gases, which in turn lowers a vehicles fuel efficiency because the engine isn't as free flowing as it should be. The more free flowing the exhaust is, the easier it is for the engine to work.
The new exhaust reduces the restiveness in two ways. It can increase the diameter of the exhaust piping throughout the car. This helps because it lets much more of the gases from the engine to be released at one time. The other way the new exhaust increases flow is by reducing the amount of bends it has. When the gases go around the bend it builds up unwanted pressure. Without the bends the engine can breathe much easier.
What About Emissions?
Usually a new exhaust system will have a high flow catalytic converter in it. These significantly help with reducing the restrictiveness of the factory installed catalytic convertor. Since the vehicle is still equipped with a catalytic convertor, it is still reducing the harmful gases from the engine.
The new convertor is usually a lot more efficient than the standard equipped convertor. Since there are less harmful emissions with the new exhaust it will not only help with your fuel consumption, but it will also help to prevent global warming by releasing less harmful gases into the environment.
How Do I Get A Gas Saving Exhaust, and How Much Will It Cost?
A new exhaust system can be a bit pricey, depending on vehicle make and the brand of the new exhaust, but it obviously will pay off to get one.
There are many exhaust and muffler shops worldwide. If you take your car into one of the shops they will usually be able to put a new exhaust system on for $300-$900 depending on the model of exhaust you choose.
If you don't want you to take your vehicle into a shop, then you can always order a new one online, and try to install it yourself. This method can save you a lot of money, but is only recommended for those that are mechanically inclined and have the right tools.
With today's problems with gas prices and environmental problems caused by car pollution, it really does make sense to invest in a new exhaust system. In the end it is well worth it to get an environmental friendly and gas saving exhaust.
