Gemstones can be drilled and made into gemstone beads. Select gemstones that are at least ΒΌ" thick to ensure that they can withstand the drilling process. Thinner gemstones may crack and break apart. All varieties of gemstones are great for making beads with. Onyx, all types of Quartz, Tigers eye, Jade, and Agate are all popular for bead and jewelry making.
Raw or polished stones can be used. Raw means natural. The surface of the stone has not been polished. Polished stones have been tumbled or manually polished using a grinder. They are shiny and brilliant. Their color is richer and brighter than that of a raw stone. Raw gemstones are found outside, or like tumbled stones can be bought online.
Proceed to your work room when ready to create beads. Use a small wooden table vice that has been padded. The vice should not be larger than five inches and should be securely mounted to your work table. Gently place the stone in the vice, in the position you want it. The hole will be drilled directly in the center of the stone so it is best to place the stone wide side horizontal, thin side vertically.
Use a cordless drill with a 1/16" Carbide tipped drill bit to drill holes into the stones. Keep your hand steady and straight. Make sure that you are wearing eye protection and that you have previous experience using a cordless drill. Apply slight pressure, but not too much or the bit may snap. Gently allow the tip of the bit to penetrate the surface of the stone and then go through it. Back the bit out and push it down through the hole once more. Back it out and set the drill aside.
Remove the gemstone from the vice and examine it. Learn from each stone you drill. Drilling gemstones and turning them into beads requires time and patience. Practice makes perfect for this project. The more beads you make the easier it will be for you to make gemstone beads.
Once you have done several of many varieties you are ready to make necklaces, earrings, bracelets, or what have you. Gemstone beads are among the most beautiful of all beads. Thanks for reading and take care!
