The first waves of the Internet boom during the early and mid 90's have long passed. Following the waves are steadier and smaller ripples. Internet millionaires were born overnight during the first Internet waves. Contrary, it takes much more effort to become the next Internet millionaire now compared to the past.
Of course, starting a web site or a blog requires ideas in order for it to have contents. A web site or a blog which has no solid content is just a waste of effort and time because you do not have a specific target audience. You need solid content to attract potential web surfers to keep visiting your site.
For starters, you can try searching what are the top Internet searches from the websites listed below to get a few ideas:
Google Zeitgeist - http://www.google.com/press/zeitgeist.html
Yahoo! Buzz Index - http://buzz.yahoo.com
AOL Hot Searches - http://hotsearches.aol.com/search/hotsearch.jsp
ask.com - http://about.ask.com/en/docs/iq/iq.shtml?o=0
WordTracker - http://www.wordtracker.com
Top-Keywords - http://www.top-keywords.com
Search Engine Guide - http://www.searchengineguide.com
Lycos - http://50.lycos.com
Look for the latest and top searched keywords that the people are searching for. This could be the topic for your new online business or maybe an eBook! Search for the latest and top searched keywords and if you can develop something out of it, by all means, don't wait and do it! For example, I notice usually a famous actor or a rock star's name always appear on the top of the search lists. You can always write a story about them or create a fan site dedicated to them. Top search engines such as Yahoo! and Google also top the search lists. You can always start something like this - Yahoo! secrets unveiled! or Google search engine secrets! Here's another tip. If you have studied in collage or a university, I bet that you have completed tons of assignments and I bet these assignments brought you nightmares while you were trying to complete them. Now you have the chance to make some money out of it by publishing it in your web site or blog. Who says hard work doesn't pays off? Or better create a website where people can auction off their home work and assignments. I'm pretty sure there would be a good demand - almost everyone went to school and for tertiary education right?
Also you can try selling some unique products off the Internet like a bracelet you have made or a painting that you have drawn. Rather than auctioning it on eBay, which you can try, or just open a web site or create a blog dedicated in selling that piece of unique item or artwork.
If you are thinking of starting an online retail shop, just bear this in mind. Try selling something that is small and light or do not require any shipping costs or better something that is downloadable. Secondly look for something that is rare in general or difficult to find in the market. Finally the pricing must be very adjustable. For example you can price it extreme low or high, without compromising value. One example that fits these three criteria is by selling an eBook. Always entice your buyers with offers. I have seen authors selling exclusive rights for that particular eBook and permit you to redistribute it.
Thus, spend some time researching on what contents that you want to upload on your web site or blog as it is one of the most important aspect for the success or failure of your site. Remember, always look for a niche and implement it! Good luck.
