How to Give Advice to Your Overweight Teenager

Advice Not Criticism

Jeanne Marie Kerns
Unfortunately, teenagers are becoming more and more overweight than ever before. The variety of foods that are out there on the market are not always the ones they should be eating on a daily basis. Of course then you also have the fast food dilemma as well. Being a parent, you have to find a way to talk to your teenager about being overweight, without ruining their self-esteem in the process.

Take a look below at some of the suggestions you can use for talking to your teenager about being overweight.

Give advice, not criticism. When approaching your teenager regarding their weight, the first thing you must take into consideration is their feelings. Giving advice on how they can reduce their weight is completely different than making fun of them over their weight. Know the difference before you begin to discuss their weight problem.

Praise them as often as you can. Being overweight can completely ruin a teenagers self-esteem. Give them compliments as often as you can without making it seem you are over doing it. Tell them how beautiful they are, or how handsome they are. Show them that even though their weight may be an issue for others, that it is not for you. Give them as much encouragement through compliments as you can.

Keep yourself open to talk to your teenager. Being overweight can make a teenager be more emotional than other teenagers. Be around when they need to talk, or make the time to sit down on a daily basis and talk about what is going on in their life. Sometimes all it takes are those few minutes of "talk time" with mom or dad.

Get active with your teenager. Instead of telling your teenager to exercise, start exercising with them. If you put yourself into your overweight teenagers exercise routine, you will get a better reaction from them. Exercising with your teenager will show them that you want to be involved. You can also have a good time with them while getting healthier together.

Teach them how to eat healthier. Since there is a lot of junk foods available for anyone to buy, you need to show your overweight teenager the difference between eating healthy, and not. Show them foods that they will like, instead of foods that are just intended to put weight on. Start buying healthier foods when you go grocery shopping. If the option is not in the house, the teenager will find something else to eat as substitution.

Show them that no one is perfect. Magazines and movies portray young men and women as mostly all being thin and fit. Take them around town and show them that there are very few people who actually resemble this assumption. Once you get them to realize that being overweight is a normal part of being a person, they begin to want to help themselves and become healthier for themselves, not others.

No matter how you go about talking to your overweight teenager about losing weight, you need to be patient, kind and never criticize them. Think of how they are feeling and how they will feel when you do begin to show them you are concerned about their weight. Go in slowly, educate them, teach them, but most of all, love them for who they are, not how much they weigh.

Great tips- it's a touchy subject since teenagers are so sensitive anyhow and can totally take well-meaning the wrong way. Getting active with them is the best!
