In the hallway or entrance, put a red rug or a red piece of long felt. Something to make it look like your guests are entering your home through the red carpet.
Put gold or silver tinsel or garland along any handrails or walls. Make the entrance glamorous. If you have mannequins, dress them in suits or fancy dresses. Or put up cardboard star displays. Ask your guests to dress for the occasion in gowns or to look like stars from TV shows. Or maybe just wear fancy glamorous hats. A prize, like a box of chocolate or miniature toy trophy (purchase at party gift store) can be awarded.
The party giver can interview guests as they enter the red carpet. Find a real or fake microphone to make it special.
If you have a camcorder, take videos during their entrance, interview and throughout the party. Make copies and send to all your guests.
Look for posters to put in the area where you are watching the Emmys to adorn the walls. Find posters of the TV shows that are nominated.
You can put magazine covers of the stars on the wall as décor if you prefer.
If you have a favorite TV show that is nominated, theme the entire party around it. For example, if you love The Office, get Steve Carrell photos or other items as well as make the area look like an office. If you love American Idol, get a lot of microphones and set up a chair area to look like the judge's area. Be creative.
If you have paper or cardboard shaped stars or can make stars put them in the room. Star shaped garlands across the room makes a great look. Gold, silver or white colored stars work.
You can also let people choose who they think will win each category and the person who gets the most correct can get a miniature toy trophy or special gift (a poster from the wall for example). Be sure to have someone keep score of choices and make them pick before the Emmys start.
You can also just put nominations in a bowl and let everyone pick one for each category. Some people gamble $1 on each category or total correct answers. Make it fun but not a big amount of money. No one wants to lose big money at a party. You can ask the winner to give a speech.
You can also have people rate stars clothing. Who had the best dress? Who the worst? One person can pretend they are Joan Rivers and discuss stars clothing or guests clothing during commercials.
One of the key things for any party is the food. Buy plenty of silver and gold colored candy kisses and of course have popcorn.
You do need some fancy food. A few special appetizers are great such as shrimp cocktail, cheese, olives and chocolate covered strawberries. Anything you can pick up with a silver of gold colored sparkling topped toothpick works great.
Drinks are also important. No matter what drinks you choose be sure they are in fancy glasses and have decorated toothpick décor. Make a search at a party store. You will be surprised what you can find.
You can make a fancy looking non-alcoholic gelatin dessert that looks like a Martini.
Martini Gelatin
8 martini glasses
1 ½ cups boiling water
2 packages melon fusion gelatin
2 ½ cups club soda
Cantaloupe, watermelon and melon balls
Stir boiling water into gelatin and dissolve. Stir in club soda and mix. Refrigerate for about 1 ½ hours. Then remove 1 cup of gelatin and put remaining Jell-O and fruit balls into martini glasses. The cup of gelatin you removed put into a blender and blend until it doubles in size. Then put over glass and it gives a clear fluffy effect. Refrigerate for 3 hours. This really looks like a fancy drink.
Any awards ceremony is fancy so whatever you do, give it a star quality. These are just a few ideas that can make the party special. A trip to any party specialty store will give you even more ideas. Good luck and may the best shows win.
