How to Give a Reiki Treatment

The Reiki Session Explained

Carole Anne Somerville
A Reiki treatment can last up to one hour and ideally the practitioner should aim to allow the flow for three to five minutes in each hand position.

Giving a Reiki Treatment

Before giving Reiki, wash your hands. Close your eyes, allow your body to relax and set your "intent" i.e. ask for the Reiki energy to flow through you for the benefit of your client. Suggest that your client imagine what they want Reiki to do for them and then ask them to relax.

During the session you will place your hands lightly on or near your client's body in the hand positions below or where you feel intuitively guided to do so. The classic hand positions enable the Reiki to flow easily and effectively into all major chakra points.

Classic Hand Positions for Giving Reiki

  1. Eyes: Place slightly cupped hands over each eye, the heel of your hands resting gently on the brow
  2. Ears: Place slightly cupped hands over client's cheeks, your little fingers resting lightly against their ears
  3. Back of head: Place both hands beneath the head, palms upwards. If client is lying on couch you will do this by lifting.

Do not ask client to raise their head as it is their job to relax, nothing more. With practice you will develop a technique to place hands beneath client's head without involving client.

  4. Neck: Place hands on either side of the neck, your little fingers resting gently on top of the client's shoulders
  5. Chest: Place hands in a V-shape at the top of client's chest. The heel of your hands should rest gently on the collar bone
    .
  6. Move to the side of your client for
    :
  7. Solar Plexus: Place one hand in front of the other flat on the body (or just above)
  8. Waist: Place one hand in front of the other, fingertips pointing away from you
  9. Root Chakra: Place your hand in a V at this Chakra. You might prefer to hold your hands above your client. Remember too that Reiki energy is not impeded if your client is covered by a blanket

    .

Ending Your Reiki Session At the end of the Reiki session, quietly ask your client to sit up when they are ready. They should be encouraged to take their time. You might give them some water to drink. Water will help their body adjust itself after receiving Reiki.

Encourage your client to ask any questions they might have or to share any experiences they have had during the session with you.

Carole, this is amazing. I had a co-worker try and explain what this is and how beneficial it is to your health. I couldn't quite get it, but this is perfectly clear now. It sounds like a great thing for the soul and body...wow. Thanks. I'm looking into this further, thanks to you, Carole. Wow, you're good friend! : - )
