How to Give Yourself an Effective Reiki Treatment

Tameko Barnette
As a Reiki Master over the last four years, I've found it essential to give oneself Reiki treatments on a regular basis. Reiki practitioners in the first level of training and attunement must give themselves Reiki treaments for a minimum of 30 days straight to cleanse themselves physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. In addition to the self-treatments, Reiki practitioners are encouraged to eat healthier and think more positively about themselves and others.

Reiki is not the healing energy itself, but it is a method of directing and focusing the healing energy that is already within us. It is a method of activating the healing energy that is already within us. When self-treatments are done, it cleanses the vessel (the body, the mind, and the spirit) so the healing energy is always at the forefront of our beings working more actively within us and outreaching to others all the time.

Reiki self-treatments have been taught to include all hand positions learned in Level 1 of Usui Reiki. However, I'd like to recommend that in addition to the hand positions that are taught allow your intuition to guide you where you need to go. Whether it's a physical need or an emotional need, you should open up to your inner voice/inner guidance and take the healing energy to the right place.

Perhaps, you don't need every hand position. You may need to clear and balance your heart chakra because you've been too afraid to open up to a romantic situation or you're having a challenging time feeling compassion towards yourself and others. It would be perfectly all right to focus your entire self-treatment session on the heart chakra only, if you feel that's what you need at the time.

One thing I've learned about natural healing is that the sky is the limit. I don't feel it's good spiritual practice to close myself off from new ways of doing things, including self-healing...especially self-healing.

The purpose of self-healing whether it's Reiki self-treatments or some other methods of alternative and holistic healing is to prepare ourselves to help others. I find I am most useful to others when I've taken the time to care for myself properly in whatever way I need it at the time.

An excellent meditation that I cultivated throughout my self-treatment practice is used for balancing myself from root to crown and crown to root. It's easy to follow and very powerful. Please feel free to tweak this meditation for your own needs. However, I do this to balance me from bottom to top and top to bottom (all-around balancing of the self).

Root to Crown Self-Treatment Meditation

First, you should set your intention for 'balance' and say a prayer for the purpose of this self-treatment remembering to express your gratitude for all that you have and all that you are right now.

Next, place one hand at your root chakra (base of the spine) and place the other hand on your crown chakra (top of the head). Keep your hands there for a minute or two to allow the energy to increase. I encourage you to really focus in on the energy at these two points.

Then, visualize the healing energy within you stirring at the root and stirring at the crown. See the energy moving up from the root touching each chakra on its way up to your crown and back down again as if it's creating a circle or an oval shape between your root and your crown. See this energy moving slowly as well. Do not increase the speed of the energy. Take your time with this and allow the energy to move in this circular pattern at least three times.

To conclude the meditation, place both hands over your heart chakra and breathe deeply and slowly into this space settling the energy down. Focus your attention on love and compassion and balance. Afterwards, bring your hands to a prayer position at your heart center.

It's done. I hope you find this meditation as healing and balancing as I have. Blessings on your healing path.
