Karen Barnes
Making acorn and pinecone ornaments can save money on natural ornaments for the home during the fall and winter seasons. The pinecone and acorn ornaments can be used from September through January as a way to add nature to the home. They can be picked up on nature walks where oak and pine trees are growing. We can purchase them at craft stores were available.

Materials Needed Glittered Ornaments

Glue. We will use all-purpose school glue to make the pinecone and acorn ornaments. It can be the school glue kid's use for their crafts and school.

Glitter. We will use the various colors that are available for the pinecones and acorns.

Scissors. Use the scissors to cut the string or ribbon to hang the ornaments with on the Christmas tree. If using ribbon, the scissors, you use for the scrapbook can work for cutting the ends of ribbon.

Ribbon or String. Use any type to create the hanger for the acorn and pinecone ornaments.

Acorns. They are easiest to find where oak trees are growing. They can be any size. Cleaning the dust and dirt off will help the glue and glitter stick to them. Ultrafine pearlescent glitter will be best to use, especially the opalescent kind. The opalescent kind will allow the golden brown color of the base to show through.

Pinecones. Various sizes of can be found near pine trees that produce them. Also, larger sizes can be found in the craft area of stores.

Making the Pinecone Ornaments

We will cover the tips in glue. After we have covered a section of the pinecone tips, we will cover the area glitter. By doing the tips in sections this will allow the glue and glitter to set.

Once we have the tips of the pinecone covered, cut a six-inch piece of string or ribbon. Tie a loop on each end so the string or ribbon will slide into place on the pinecone. Carefully slide the loops over the narrow end of the pinecones and place between the pinecone prongs. Slide the loop gently down so it is snug without breaking the prongs. This will create a hanger for the pinecones for the Christmas tree.

We can cut and glue the ribbon to the rounded bottom of the pinecones. Only one end of the ribbon will be glued to the pinecone base. The other end of the pine cone can be attached to a grapevine swag with other fall or winter items to create a hanging wall or door decoration.

Glittering the Acorns for Decorations

Completely cover the acorns in glue. Roll the covered acorns in the glitter. Allowing the acorns to dry without squishing the glitter may be difficult but it can be done. Once the glitter is dry, we will glue two ends of a piece of string to the top of the acorn for the hanger for the Christmas tree.

You can also glue one end of a ribbon to the glitter acorn to create a swag like the pinecones. Also, using a solid wreath, we can glue the acorns to the wreath to create a colorful wreath that can be used always.

The acorns can also be used in a decorative bowl or place to create a centerpiece for a table or counter. The acorns can also be placed in a large Brandy snifter as a coffee table centerpiece.
