How to "Go Green" for Mother's Day and Celebrate an Earth-Friendly Mom

Dave Maddox
Celebrate a green Mother's Day for your eco-friendly mom! The earth is mother to all of us, so your mom will be glad that you are thinking globally when you celebrate her special day.

The key to green living is sustainability, doing things over a long time, so the best things you can do are those that will continue making improvements into the future, starting with something as simple as expanding your family's recycling program. There are lots of other things to do, too - read on! If you want to print a copy of this, don't forget to use recycled paper, or even the back of something you no longer need.

Making nice recycling baskets for key rooms in the house is one good thing to do for mom on her special day. You can also plant a tree, which will provide great memories for years to come as it grows. If you don't have a yard, you can give her a gift certificate from one of the many charities which will plant trees in her name, and give her a nice indoor plant which the whole family can water and care for as a reminder of our responsibility for our world. If you've got the money, a Bonsai tree provides a miniature version of the tree you planted, and will last for decades with good care.

You might also make an herb garden, or plant herbs in pots for the kitchen window. If you care for them over the months to come your family will have fresh herbs as part of your meals, something that will make your eco-friendly mom proud.

Your parents are probably very busy, so you might help plan some "green" activities that they haven't gotten around to and help get them done, like shopping for compact fluorescent bulbs for your light fixtures, or maybe one of the other projects you've learned about in school. Sometimes all it takes is your enthusiasm to help your parents get the projects planned and done!

One of the biggest challenges for a family is green shopping. You can help your mom find products that are more eco-friendly, with less packaging and processing. If you make a list, you can help her buy things for your family's needs that support your green living better. Remember, though, "reduce, reuse, recycle" doesn't mean you can cut down on how many annoying little brothers or sisters you have!

If you want to be silly, though, you can ask an adult to help you color your hair green in honor of the day. You'll show the spirit, and there are cool hair colors which wash right out again.

Honoring your eco-friendly mom with a "green" Mother's Day is a great way to tell her that you care about her, since you're going to be taking care of the Earth long into the future, something that's very important to her, and going ahead and doing it now!
