How to Go Green when Spring Cleaning

Zoe
It's that time of year again, time to make your house look spic and span. This year, instead of using your normal products to do the household cleaning, why don't you consider going green? According to holisticmed.com, household products are among some of the most toxic everyday substances to which people are exposed. Using naturally derived, biodegradable non-toxic cleaning products clean just as well as traditional products, if not better. In addition to not being detrimental to your health, green products are better for the environment. As opposed to traditional products, green products don't release harmful fumes to the environment and typically the packaging is more ecological too.

Some tips when going green when spring cleaning are:

1. Avoid antibacterial cleaners, all-purpose cleaners, and air fresheners

2. Use products that are biodegradable

The Web site www.seventhgeneration.com offers a variety of effective, inexpensive green products. However, If designer products aren't for you, homemade cleaners work just as well. I personally use vinegar and baking soda to clean almost anything. All I do is mix in a little warm water with either of these and I use it as an all-purpose cleaner. In addition, Instead of using air fresheners I like to boil cinnamon. You can also use cloves, or any other herbs. Plants may not make your house smell much different but they are good for filtering air. Lastly, be careful when getting rid of your toxic cleaners. Don't just toss them in the trash. Many communities hold toxics & electronics recycling days and will happily take them from you.
