How to Go Green when You Travel

Amanda Abella
Many people wonder how they can keep up their eco-conscious living when they travel. After all, you are not in the comfort of your own home and some things, such as using fuel to travel, can be unavoidable. Fortunately, you can go green with just about anything these days and traveling is no exception.

There are many different kinds of ways that you can travel green. From making small eco-conscious efforts when you travel to partaking in eco-tourism, traveling the green way has never been easier.

Eco-conscious Travel

The word "conscious" simply means being aware of something. "Eco" pertains to the environment. Therefore, eco-conscious travel simply means being conscious of the environmental impact of your traveling. One of the best ways to engage in eco-conscious traveling is to avoid traveling by plane if it is possible. Or, if you live in a vacation spot like Florida, consider a "staycation." That is to say rent out an apartment at the beach for a weekend and enjoy the natural beauty of your own home. This eliminates the extra use of fuel and still allows you to clear your mind.

Eco-Tourism

Eco-tourism primarily pertains to ecologically sustainable tourism. The primary focus of eco-tourism is experiencing natural areas that foster environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation, and conservation.

The best part is that you do not have to go far in order to experience some eco-tourism of your own. The United States is home to some incredible natural wonders such as The Grand Canyon and The Florida Everglades.

Sustainable Travel

Detour Destinations defines sustainable travel as "a level of tourism activity that can be maintained over the long term because it results in the net benefit for the social, economic, natural, and cultural environments of the area in which it takes place."

That is to say, sustainable tourism aims to reduce negative ecological impacts in a holistic way in urban, rural, and wilderness areas. It confronts issues such as economic viability, socio-cultural sensitivity, and environmental sustainability.

Green Travel

Green traveling is a simple concept. It is the simple act of being eco-conscious when you travel. That is to say, do some research on how you can reduce the environmental impact of your travel destination. You can also choose eco-conscious options when they are made available. And lastly, you can travel green by making low-impact choices and saving money.

With these options and tips, you will not longer have to worry about losing your green habits when you travel. Thanks to eco-conscious individuals all over the world, even tourism has become eco-friendly while still remaining enjoyable.
