We spend most of our time talking to each other, yet none of us spare much thought with regard to improving listening skills. Verbal communication takes up so much time, yet miscommunication occurs because most people are more interested in getting their point across rather than listening to who they are communicating with. Becoming a better communicator involves improving listening skills to a very large extent.

The first thing to in order to improving listening skills is to approach listening in a calm and centered manner, and keeping preconceived notions or plans out of the way of your listening experience, so that these distractions do not hinder your listening process. Improving listening skills involves actually listening without letting internal or external distractions matter. It sounds simple, but isn't so, at all, because distractions tempt us towards concentrating on them most of the time, hampering listening skills in the process.

Improving listening skills also consists of never dismissing any topic as boring or unworthy of your attention. Good listeners are always interested, and do not let personal prejudices hamper their listening experience. You might disagree with most or all of what the speaker has said to you, but in order to improving listening skills, you have to accept that everyone has a different opinion about the same thing and that the speaker's opinion can be different from yours.

The speaker has a right to his or her own opinions, even if they are polar opposites of yours, just as you have right to your own perspective and approach.
