The first step in having a good doctor visit is to get ready. There is a two-part process to getting ready for your doctor visit. The first part of getting ready is making the appointment. I usually make all my grandmas appointments for her. The best times are usually early morning so you can get everything over with early. It's better to get it over with than worrying about it all day. When you worry about it your blood pressure raises and can cause problems at your visit. I always ask if my grandma will be taking tests at her visit. If you are taking tests you usually have to go on an empty stomach which benefits if you go early. If you are attending a new doctor make sure you take all your insurance cards, id, and all important documents.
I usually make sure my grandma has all her important cards in her purse. If you're very sick, or just came from a hospital you should not go alone. When my grandma got out of the hospital and had to go to her doctor I went with her. This is a good idea so you can help ask questions, take notes, give support, and explain things better. Sometimes having a family member or a friend will make this difficult visit easier. The person like my grandma is usually sick and if you ask those questions for them it will be easier for the visit. You should also ask all the important questions, and ask the doctor for medication refill prescriptions. I make my grandma ask the doctor to fill out refills all the time. This will help when your local pharmacy needs a doctor referral for your medication. When your medication runs out of refills the pharmacy has to call the doctor. This can usually take a few days and can be stressful. So if the doctor gives you refill prescriptions there will be no pharmacy delay and you can get your medication on time.
The second part of getting ready is getting your things in order. When my grandma is going to a new doctor I put all her medications in one bag. All new doctors need to know all your medications so you should definitely do this first. If you need any x-rays or referrals make sure you get them from the previous doctor. Make a list of any health problems you and your family may have. If your doctor finds you have any health problems like blood pressure and diabetes. Then you will have to keep it checked at home every day. So you will do daily tests then bring the results with you on your next doctor visit.
The next step in how to have a good doctor visit is to see the doctor. When I go with my grandma we always arrive early. When you arrive early you get to relax and more time to fill out applications for first time visits. Also if you arrive early you may get to see the doctor faster than everyone else. When you see the doctor get to know him and the nurses very well. These people will be helping you stay healthy so it's good to become friends. You usually see the nurse first so it's a good idea to ask her questions about her and the doctor. Once you become well known with the doctor and nurses your next visit won't be uncomfortable.
When you finally see the doctor ask him all the questions that you've had. As stated above bring someone with you if your nervous for the first time. If you're going for a certain illness ask all the important questions that you can. Try to find out everything that is wrong with you, how it happened, and what you can do for the illness. Most doctor visits require tests and you have to wait a few days for results. During the wait time it's good to not worry and stress too much. Usually if the basic tests are ok and you live a healthy life your tests should be fine. Usually the doctor will give you a prescription if something is wrong with you. If you had a test taking and will need another medication it will be sent to your local pharmacy. Another note if you get any medicine that you do not understand your pharmacist can assist you. This is good for when you cannot contact your doctor. The final step is to make sure you understand everything. If you don't make sure you ask the doctor to re-explain before you leave.
The final step on having a good doctor visit is leaving the office. When your visit is over you usually get a new appointment. This is also a good opportunity to ask the nurse about any questions you may have. Usually your next appointment will be a month away unless you're very sick. This will give you time to take your medication and see how it affects you. For your next visit just follow these steps all over again.
Going to the doctor is a great way to stay healthy. It can be a stressful time or a peaceful time it all depends on you. If you follow these steps your visit can be very enjoyable. Remember an apple a day can keep the doctor away.
