How to Be a Good Person

Or at Least a Better One

Leah Harris
With depression on the upswing many people are looking for new ways to improve their own situations and even their moods. With our current state of affairs, we can tend to feel somewhat oppressed or depressed; however, there are many ways to deal with such a situation. Have you ever heard the phrase, "Someone is always worse off than you?" Has that ever one time made you feel even one percent better? It really does nothing to cheer us up by realizing there are others that feel even worse than us. Does it?

So one way we can deal with sadness or loneliness is to look for those worse off than us and reach out with a helping hand. Now, I'm not talking major volunteer hours or going to join the Peace Corps, although both are awesome ideas. I'm just talking maybe a plate of cookies or a bag of clothes you or your family can spare. There are many ways to achieve this. Yes, this sounds like the typical solution, but have you ever tried it?

Here are four steps you can do to improve your own mood situation as well as brighten someone else dreary day:
1. Sit down and really think of the person or family that is around you that needs the most help.
2. Decide whether you would like your help to be anonymous or out-in-the-open.
3. Think of what they would need the most or what need they have that you can easily fill.
4. Put it into action.

Whether this is an emergency situation like a house fire that your neighbors had and now they are needing to start over with the basics or someone else you know who may be feeling a little down, simply reaching out with material goods or even encouraging words can really lift them up and bring them joy. You can be their hero and in turn help your own heart to recover.

Now you may think that since you are already feeling burdened by your own problems that you couldn't possibly have words of wisdom for someone else going through the same or similar feelings, but you can. It's called 'compassion' and you will have it now more than ever!

So make good use of your time, follow these four steps I've outlined and get going. Just see what happens. It will be truly amazing.

  • Number one way to ward off sadness or lonliness
  • Better your life
  • Improve your mood
Helping others is a surefire way to improve your own mood.
