How I Got a Better Rate on My Auto Insurance

Shan-Lyn Forsythe
Owning a van and suddenly having a shock absorber coming through the back end of the vehicle, meant it was time to go shopping for a new car. Without a doubt, I wanted something a little better. I knew I couldn't afford a brand new vehicle, still, even a used vehicle in a better condition meant that my insurance company would most likely charge me more for my premiums. And my intuition proved correct.

Somehow, I knew I deserved a 'fair quote,' so I made an appointment with my insurance company to talk face-to-face with one of their representatives. I was determined to get my premium quote lowered, and I already planned my steps in advance.

1. When talking to the insurance company representative, I made certain that I was well attired, and rested. I spoke to the representative politely.

2. I did not complain and argue. That would have meant an immediate defense response on the part of the insurance representative.

3. I talked reasonably and outlined what I wanted with them. I needed two-way insurance, and I knew this would cost me more. I asked them if a package deal could be obtained.

4. When the representative still insisted on keeping the price rather high, I asked her if there was a way to lower the rate. She was courteous and explained that I could increase my deductible, which would lower my yearly premium rate.

5. I felt a little queasy in seeing how high the deductible would be and expressed my concerns, crediting my insurance company for being one of the best.

6. Politely apologizing for perhaps taking the time of this agent who was trying to assist me, I asked if there could be a better package, but I made certain to always let the insurance agent know that I was very appreciative of their time and effort.

7. When the agent started pulling figures out, I took the opportunity to explain that my credit history was perfect, and that paying my bills on time was always a priority with me. I also pointed out that I had been with their company since I owned a vehicle, which is why I didn't want to leave them; that I valued them as a good company.

8. I asked the agent to check my background history with them, and she did. It was then she realized that I was not a 'risk factor'. I pointed out that I understood that their company had to be careful, and made certain that the agent understood that I understood.

9. The agent took the time to check my history with them, then crunched some more numbers. She presented me a package that I finally became satisfied with. Not only did she lower my deductible, she also lowered my premium.

I used my safe driving, my schooling for defense driving, and my perfect credit rating to 'back me up'.
I knew that all these factors would help me, and I made certain to point them out to the agent. Simultaneously, I made certain that I had always appreciated their existence as a company and valued their time with me.

When I walked out the company office, I was glad that I had taken the time to respect my credit rating, and to be a safe driver on the road. It paid off.
