My daughter noticed it too. When the three of us went anywhere together, I knew it was going to be a fiasco of some kind. Something would upset him and everyone would end up miserable. There were many times when my daughter and I did things that did not include him. He just wasn't enjoyable to be with. anymore.
On weekends, he spent the days napping, not wanting to really do anything. I suggested he see a doctor, thinking he might be in a depression of some kind. He didn't think he was, but mentioned that he didn't feel like himself anymore. When we did go somewhere, he started using a cane. I couldn't believe that I was married to a 53 year old - very old man.
Friends started noticing his quick temper and also suggested he see a doctor. He put it off and things continued to get worse. When he came home from work each day, he would easily nap for 2 hours. After dinner, he would fall asleep again in his recliner for the evening. It angered me that he would not call the doctor. I couldn't understand it then, but I guess he was just scared.
Finally, after 2 two weeks of getting up to use the bathroom several times each night, he agreed to have some tests done. His diagnosis came quickly and without a surprise: Type 2 Diabetes. Within the day, he was put on Glyburide, a drug that helps control blood sugar levels. He was also told what foods he was allowed to eat and all the foods to avoid.
My husband then enrolled in diabetic classes that helped him understand how to live and eat as a diabetic. He was trained in the use a glucometer which tests blood glucose levels. Although he was not happy with his restrictions of food, he followed the instructions to a T. He quickly lost the weight that he had put on over the years. Since we now eliminated junk food that was in our house, I lost weight too. Within a short time, he started to feel much better. He had more energy than ever and was once again fun to be with.
A month after his diagnosis, my daughter and I could barely keep up with him while touring the grounds of a local historic site. He had so much energy and wanted to keep walking after many hours. In the past, he would rest often and tire easily. This was no longer the case. He even noticed how easy it was to move about now that he felt better and was not carrying the extra weight.
Although he does complain that he can no longer eat the way he used to, he truly is happier and healthier than he has been in years. His cholesterol levels dropped dramatically and his overall health is now excellent. We all get along like the old days and he is fun to be around once again. It is great to have him back!
