"Darwin had a far easier time with the acceptance of evolution than orthomolecular physicians have had gaining acceptance of the therapeutic use of ascorbic acid." Dr. Andrew Saul
Introduction
You as an individual can also save a lot of money on healthcare with orthomolecular medicine. It is cheaper and safer than drugs.
Information on orthomolecular medicine is given at a number of websites including www.orthomed.org. This is the website of the International Society for Orthomolecular Medicine. Their address is as follows:

The Heart
It is an odd, but terrible, fact that drugs which treat the heart can have side effects that are very bad for the heart. One example of this is Lisinopril, can cause irregular or slow heartbeat as well as many other serious side effects (1). Lopressor can cause unusually slow or irregular heartbeat also (1). On the other hand, coenzyme Q10, vitamin C, and vitamin E are supposed to be good for the heart but without any substantial risk. also potassium is considered to be good for the heart in most situations, but sodium and fat are thought to be bad for the heart and the rest of the cardiovascular system. The vegan diet is considered healthy because it has no cholesterol. Calcium and magnesium are considered to be good for the heart rhythm.
Food Allergies
Celiac disease is known to be a food allergy (2). The patient is allergic to gluten. Unfortunately mental disturbances are seen in this amino acid disease (2). This is also reported in Ref. 3. The treatment is a diet that is gluten-free.
Integrative Medicine
Dr. Andrew Weil favors "integrative medicine". By this he means that he accepts both orthodox medicine and alternative medicine. Ref. 4 reports Dr. Weil as saying that potassium deficiency can result in an irregular heartbeat. He has written that "those who take diuretics may have lower levels of potassium" (2). He says that it is essential for the heart to operate normally. A similar position is taken by orthomolecular scientists. Ref. 5 reports that potassium is essential for a "normal heartbeat". It is also considered as "anithypertensive" and helpful in "stroke prevention". Weil favors an anti-inflammatory diet for healthy aging. He reports that coffee has a side effect of causing an irregular heartbeat (4).
Conclusions
Pauling & Rath had a very controversial theory about cardiovascular disease. More research needs to be done on this theory, which involves using large amounts of vitamin C and the amino acid lysine. The idea of using amino acids as treatments is a good one because the body is made from, fueled by, and repaired by the food that we eat. Their articles were censored from Pubmed.gov, which is a massive database maintained by the National Library of Medicine (US). However, the articles are in the JOM (Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine), which is at Ref. 5. Pauling died in 1994, but Dr. Rath is still alive and still supports the theory. According to the theory, the majority of cardiovascular diseases can be beaten with this orthomolecular treatment.
