Start by dressing your child in something plain. Pick a solid color that compliments your baby's skin tone without a crazy pattern or words splashed across the front.
Make sure to wipe off your lovely baby's face - unless the whole point of the picture is capturing the huge amounts of food all over! No one wants to see an adorable baby photo with snot in the way.
Get up close and personal with your baby when taking the picture. Most digital cameras can be set for either "portrait" or "close up" settings. Adjust your camera so its main focus is on what is directly in front of it before starting your photo session.
Take a couple test shots before going for the gold. Don't rush the picture taking process or everyone will get frustrated. Check to see what the picture looks like before taking tons of pictures.
Think about the background. Set your baby up in a comfortable spot where they are safe and supported. When the background is distracting, like a glimpse of the dirty dishes or the messy coffee table, no one will notice the cute baby.
Try to use natural light - but not direct sunlight. Direct sunlight will blow out, or make all the details in your beaming baby's face disappear. A flash does the same thing.
Stop and try again later. Seriously. No one wants to look at pictures of a baby crying. Getting a great baby shot may take a day or two. Being patient and keeping a positive attitude will help ensure a great photograph and encourage kids to enjoy having their picture taken later in life.
Don't want to be in charge of getting the precious baby picture? There are professionals out there that will take your baby pictures for you, but be ready to pay the price. Portrait sittings can be costly but you pay for what you want. If you decide to look into a professional portrait sitting, make sure to do the research on local photographers and seek out one that will produce images in the style you want and for a price you are comfortable with.
