How to Make a Great Gift Blanket

Chloe Thorn
I am always looking for different gifts that are handmade so that I can assure whoever I am sending the gift to is getting something thoughtful and what they really want. This blanket is great for all ages and both men and women.

When making this blanket keep a few things in mind. First the likes and dislikes of the person you are giving it too. There are many patterns on fleece fabric and you can usually cater to many different interests with it. Also keep in mind the height of the person you are giving the blanket too. Personally I like extra long blankets but a good rule of thumb would be to purchase at least a foot and half longer than the person's height. This will make sure the blanket is long enough.

Next when you visit the fabric store don't just pick one fleece fabric pick two that go together. Such as your patterned fabric and then a solid color that matches. You can also pick two solids such as red and black which contrast well with each other. Get both pieces in the exact same size. Make sure the width is the same as well, as with many fabrics they do not always come in the same width.

Once you get home all you need is a large space on your floor and a pair of scissors to start working. Lay out both pieces of fabric one atop the other. The side you feel is best facing out. Once they are even use your scissors to cut notches on the ends of the fabric. They need to be 1 inch apart and 1 ½ inches long. Do that all around the material. Take the corner notch or tab from bottom fleece and below fleece and tie them in a knot. Make sure to do all four corners first, this will make sure as you tie the rest the blanket stays even. After the corners have been tied than tie one side in its entirety and then do the opposite side fully. Than finish the next two sides, this does take awhile even though it is just knots.

Now that your blanket is together you can do a few things. First is with the material hanging off the know you can trim to make sure it is even, you can cut into little strips so it resembles a tassel, or cut shorter so it is almost non existent. This gives you 3 kinds of blankets. You do not have to sew anything in the middle due to it being fleece they naturally adhere.

These blankets are great because you do not have to sew and if you tie your knots tight they blanket stays together forever. This is also a great craft for kids to learn, and they will have a lovely blanket to show off when finished.
