First you need to make sure you have your favorite ice cream, you can use one flavor or two, but you need to have a gallon. You will also need crushed oreos or the store brand oreos are good too. You could also add nuts, a different cookie or graham crackers, nilla wafers, cookie dough, brownies, or a variety of toppings such as fudge or carmel. Candy peices could also be added, its important to be creative.
You will need to let the ice cream soften up and then layer the ice cream with the toppings. Put the ice cream on the bottom and then just add your toppings and add another layer of ice cream. You could even chose different ice cream flavors and toppings for each of the layers. You could put a layer of icing on top or just use the ice cream as the covering then decorate it. I usually use a baking pan but you could use a bowl or anything that you could stick in the freezer. You will need to let the cake sit in the freezer for a few hours to reharden. Be sure to make sure that whatever container you use will fit into your freezer before you begin making the cake.
When you are decorating the cake you can let it harden up if it has begun to melt a little too much. A neat thing to use is the cool coat you can buy at the store that hardens when you put it on the ice cream to write happy birthday or a message or even draw pictures or designs. You could also use store bought decorations or craft your own. These cakes are great because you have so many different options, it can be personalized in so many different ways. Your guest certainly will be delighted to find all the hidden surprises you can add in there. I love chocolate and add crushed peanut butter cups and cookies and add fudge and carmel and it's so delicious. Just keep this in mind the next time you are shopping for a cake. It doesnt take more than 45 minutes to make and decorate. Then you just pop it in the freezer until you're ready to eat it!
