How to Be a Great Manager and Leader

Crystal Kincade
You are being promoted and becoming a Manager now, here are some pointers on how to become the most successful Manager you can be!

BE A GOOD LISTENER AND COMMUNICATER: Communication is key when becoming a good and effective leader or manager. If you can't communicate to others, than how do you expect people to understand what you are asking of them? Some things I have done in the past to help me be the best at my communication skills are speech classes. If you are enrolled at a school, check into the courses offer and think about taking a class on speech. This will teach you how to get across to certain audiences and how to become a good listener. Listen to what your people have to say to you, they are your eyes and ears of things and you have to remember that you are only as strong as your weakest team member, they are a reflection of you. You can find out things needing improvement, you can find out the weak areas and the positive area of things through your own people.

IF YOU MAKE A CHOICE, STICK TO THAT CHOICE: There is nothing worse than a person that is all over the place and can't make a decision on his/her own. If you make a decision, then stick to it for now and stand by it. If you are wrong for what you went with, then learn by it and correct it for the future. Show your people that you are confident and able to make a, "Right now" choice and that you stand by what you went with. If you show you are unsure, your people will have less faith in you and look at you like you don't belong in that position.

MAKE CHOICES THAT ARE RIGHT BY EVERYONE: You should always treat everyone with the same respect. Favoritism to one worker or a few will make others turn against you. You should display a consistency of all equals, all the way around. If you tend to only tend to one person or group, you in return will be looked at as racist or considered to show favoritism to certain people. It makes for a rumor mill and an ugly work place fast!

SET THE EXAMPLE AT ALL TIMES: If you expect people that work for you, to be there on time, then you too should make it there. If you lead by example, then you will set the example in return. You will be highly respected by others and you will notice that you will start to wear off on the people around you.
