Saturday morning I got up and was surprised to find him awake and dressed, something that set off my panic alarm. I was worried that his cold had settled into his chest and he was waiting for me to get up and take him to the doctor. He's very thoughtful that way. He could be suffering from something horrific, but not want to wake me up and disturb my beauty rest. I guess he figures I need my rest more urgently than he would ever need a doctor. But I digress.
After I was sure nothing was wrong with him, I found the reason for his unusual perkiness at that hour had to do with a girl. He'd stumbled across a girl on the internet named Kumiko. Since he'd taken two years of Japanese, I wasn't too surprised that he would want to meet a Japanese girl. We talked more about her, he showed me her photo, and I ended up agreeing to drive him to meet her in a city about half an hour from where we live. He was in a bit of a rush, so I took a quick shower and off we went.
When we got there, we found that Kumiko lived with her sister June. They were both lovely girls, graceful, petite and a little shy. My son was obviously smitten from the moment he laid eyes on them. Not wanting to interrupt this poignant moment, I stood back and watched him interact with them. I was a little confused, though, since he'd told me it was Kumiko he was interested in, and there he was getting very friendly with both of them.
To make a long story short, my son really couldn't decide which of the girls he liked best. We brought them both home with us and the three of them ran up the stairs to his room. Not wanting to be too nosy, (but hey, I'm a mom!) I peeked in to see what they were doing. To my surprise they were wrestling around on his bed. So much for being shy! It was the happiest I've seen him since school let out for the summer.
While he was busy in his room with the girls, I set out some bowls of food and water, filled the litter box, and charged the camera battery. My son had wanted a pet since we first moved back to California and after two years, he'd finally made the decision to adopt. He signed the contract to take care of them responsibly and has been very conscientious about his role in their lives. The kittens have shown none of the symptoms of stress that a new home might cause, and that can only be from his attention to their needs for a safe and happy environment.
I was a little concerned about taking on twins, but it was a good choice for both my son and his pets. The girls have each other for companionship when they aren't getting attention from my son, and he has a couple cute girls who love to hang out in his room. It doesn't get much better than that.
