How to Have a Great Vacation Even If You Hate to Travel

Michael Oksa
Let's face it, some people like to travel, but others can't stand it. The reason they don't like it is rather simple: their previous vacations weren't all that much fun. If you don't care that much for travel, then read on. We will look at ways that will make it a fun and relaxing experience.

It's up to you - The first thing you must do is determine what type of vacation you would really like. Not what others like, not what's popular, not what your significant other wants to do. At this stage you can be selfish. The idea is to imagine what your dream vacation is.

Check into it - Once you have your destination and potential itinerary in mind, start doing research. Visit websites about where you want to go. However, don't limit yourself to websites that only cater to tourists. Try to get a better understanding of what the place is really like. That way your expectations will be more in line with reality.

A good fit - You have to choose a place that's a good match for your personality. If you don't care about art, then don't feel obligated to go to museums. If you like solitude, then go to more remote areas of the globe that are not top tourist sites. To put it another way, you are trying to get a place to fit in with you instead of forcing yourself to fit into it.

Be prepared - Even those who enjoy traveling often dislike some part of the travel process. Standing in line, delayed flights, or lost luggage are a few things most people don't like. It will help if you understand what to do at each stage and be prepared for possible hiccups in your plans. For example, having a change of clothes in your carry on bag can mitigate the hassle of lost luggage.

Long time gone - To really enjoy travel, make sure you plan to be away long enough. It normally takes a few days to get used to a new place. An extended weekend simply doesn't give you enough time to reap the benefits of a vacation. One longer trip to a dream destination is much better than several harried trips to just anywhere.

It takes two? - Finally, be sure that you are traveling with people you get along with. If you and your significant other constantly bicker, then do what you can to take separate vacations. If you like to go out and enjoy the nightlife, don't take along someone that's shy; and so on. On the other hand, if you like to explore on your own, then go alone.

No matter how much you dislike travel now, you can turn it around and enjoy your vacation of a lifetime. Just as there are endless varieties of vacationers, there are endless varieties of vacations. Bon voyage!
