How Greek Life Creates Leaders

Get Involved. Go Greek

Todd B.
When I was in high school, I was involved in every club imaginable. I played sports, was on student senate, and was generally busy as physically possible. These things were great; they got me into a university, and taught me valuable skills. Once I moved to college, however, I struggled to find ways to be involved. Student senate is suddenly more impressive than the small high school classroom. I wanted to be involved in both my university and my community. How did I find a way to do both of these things?

I went Greek.

People generally don't realize the benefits that you can get from Greek life in terms of becoming involved and growing as a leader. Two of the main reasons that I joined a fraternity deal with these. The leadership opportunities, as well as the opportunities to become involved with something big really drew me to Greek life.

The leadership opportunities found in Greek life are endless. All organizations need leadership for the entire organization; there are multiple positions on a fraternity's e-board. Each one offers different chances for learning and growing. Each position shows leadership. Not the kind of leadership that you get from being the President of NHS senior year; in college leadership like this really prepares you for being a leader in that "after college" life known as the real world.

Not all leadership opportunities have to be huge. All organizations have events that need planning. This is a great chance for someone to pick up a smaller leadership role that does not require as much of a time commitment. Many organizations have committees; these committees need chairs and heads to lead.

Not only does Greek life offer leadership opportunities; it also gives people the opportunity to be involved. Organizations have events; you don't have to lead these, but you can still be an integral part of the process. It helps someone learn to work in a team toward a common goal. You can still be a part of something larger; you can still be in events that affect the community without having all of the weight fall on you.

Being in a fraternity has offered me the chance to better myself through leadership opportunities and chances to effect through participation. These become useful in both the personal and business worlds. Taking these opportunities is a great way to enhance your college experience and beyond.
