How to Be a Green Actor

Help Yourself and the Environment

Robin Raven
The environment's well-being is tied to the fate and well-being of all the world's people and creatures. A real and immediate proof of that is what is happening to the world that the polar bears now. The ricochet of the choices that people have made in their day-to-day can have wonderful or tragic effects in the years to come. You'll feel much better about your art-and know that there will be an audience to appreciate it long-term-when you do your best to pursue your art in as green a manner as possible.

One way that actors can start to be green is by placing their headshots, resume and reel online. This is becoming more acceptable as time goes by. Instead of submitting paper version (many of which often get thrown in the trash), sending a link to your website on a recycled or non-paper postcard is the way that many actors attempt to be noticed. One can even email the website to casting directors and producers, eliminating the need for paper in that scenario altogether.

Another way that actors can be green is to get acting leads online from websites like TalentPostings.com. Whether can buying newspapers daily that get thrown out, you can submit yourself electronically for many parts. Simply keep a copy of your main headshots and resume on your hard drive for quick submitting.

When going out on an audition, consider public transportation. This may take a bit of extra planning, but it will be worth it. Not only can you focus on looking at your lines on public transportation (as opposed to focusing on driving), taking public transportation can amp up your energy with the extra exercise it provides.

Use email and social networking websites to advertise your latest project. Inform all of your friends and family members with a phone call when you will be in a play or film, then send email verification. A phone call gives an even more personal touch than a mailed invitation would, and the follow-up email allows easier access to the data. Also, there's no way to lose an online invitation unless it's deleted.

It's inevitable that an actor use postcards and printed headshots at some point. Even in the modern technologically advanced show business climate, there's still old school producers and directors. When you do need to use printing, choose recycled papers that are ethically produced. Being conscientious about other aspects means that you don't have to worry about this aspect of your career.
