How to Use Green Screen Studios for Apple iPhone and iPod Touch

Tom Servo
Green Screen Studios is a really cool app that enables you to replace the background of an image on your Apple iPhone of iPod Touch, just like any other chroma key editor you would use on a computer. Obviously, there is endless fun that can be had with this app. The limits are entirely up to your imagination... and the size of your photo collection. Green Screen Studios makes a "lite" version of their app that can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store. Naturally, the lite version doesn't have all the same features as the full version, which is why it's free. But hey, it's free!

Now, I will warn you, the lite version only lets you use the background images that come with the app. So that's kind of a bummer. However, the full version is pretty inexpensive. So try out the free version, and if you really like it a lot, just go buy the full version later.

Step 1. Go to the Apple App store and download the lite version of Green Screen Studios and install it on your iPhone or iPod Touch. After install is complete, tap on the icon to launch the app.

Step 2. Choose a photo to start with. On the main screen, tap on "Choose Photo." A new window will open up. Select the photo that you want to play by tapping on it.

Step 3. The photo that you select for editing will open in a window and below it you will notice a toolbar. Simply tap on "Backgrounds" from the toolbar to select a background to replace the original background with. Like I said before, unfortunately you will only see photos that come pre-installed on the lite version of the Green Screen Studios app. If you buy the full version, at this step you would be able to pick any image you like.

Step 4. Select a tool. The first you may notice when after you select your background image, is that your picture will remain unchanged. Don't fret, there's more to do. Tap on the "Tools" menu at the bottom of the screen. You will now see six different tools you can chose from to replace the background. For now, it's probably best to just hose the "Automatic Replacement" tool.

Step 5. Continue to experiment with the other five tools until you find the one that works best for your image. The "Automatic Replacement" tool might not give you the results you were expecting. It really just depends on the image you're working with. Sometimes it does the job, but in most cases you will need to use one of the more sophisticated tools. When using one of the manual replacement tools, make sure you go to the "Settings" menu so you can adjust your brush and eraser size.
