How to Make a Grim Reaper Halloween Costume

And Learn a Special Trick or Treat Gag to Play on Someone

Nothing can be more telling or frightening than the sight of the Grim Reaper at your door. Just his presence tell you "Your time's up." That's why, on the spookiest night of the year, no other costume is more appropriate than a Grim Reaper. I'll show you how to make your own Grim Reaper Halloween costume this season and then give you an idea for a 'trick' that's guaranteed to make 'em die laughing.

How to make a Grim Reaper Halloween Costume: The Clothes

First off, everything the Grim Reaper wears is black. So no need to match anything. You'll need to buy a floor length hooded black robe that goes over the body rather than tie in the front. These can easily be found at Party City or any other Halloween costume store. Next, invest in a 'faceless' hooded mask. This nylon mask fits over the head and has a sheer black fabric over the face so you can see other, but they can't see your face. I bought one at Party City a few years ago and it freaked everyone out. To complete the clothing, wear black pants, black shoes, and black gloves.

How to make a Grim Reaper Halloween Costume: The Props

The Grim Reaper has one major prop: a long sickle. Again, this can be purchased at any Party City (where I got mine) or Halloween costume store. It's made from plastic and the sickle part should easily attach to the rod. Don't under any circumstances use a real blade or sickle. That's far too dangerous.

Another good prop would be a skull. Those can be found in almost any store that's carrying Halloween decorations. And finally, top it off with a pocket watch to let people know when their time is officially up!

How to make a Grim Reaper Halloween Costume: The Trick and the Treat

Are you read to freak someone out with your Grim Reaper Halloween costume? To start, you'll need a 'victim'. Find out who some of the guests are at the party you are attending and choose one you know can take a joke. Get a piece of construction paper and write the person's name on it. Roll up the paper and tie a string around it. Keep the paper up your sleeve until you are at the party and ready to confront your victim. Present the victim with the paper. Hopefully, they will get the joke and be amused or at worst a little perplexed. Now for the treat: Hand you victim a roll of Life Savers for the ultimate in Halloween irony.
