How to Grow Black Hair

Black Hair Growth Do's and Don'ts

Before you can nourish your scalp, you must nourish your body. African American women have a long standing health epidemic in America - the major reason is because of the foods that we put into our bodies, our temple. Proper nourishment is numero uno in developing strong, thick, healthy hair. Commit to eating a well balanced diet everyday. This means you should incorporate the daily required vitamin D, calcium, protein, fiber, omega 3, and B12 - all essential vitamins and minerals that promote healthy hair growth.

Use lotions and hair creams to moisturize your hair. Black hair is genetically prone to dryness and because of its coarseness, it can be challenging at times to prevent hair breakage when we use chemicals and heat on already dehydrated hair.

Opt for natural oils whenever you can. Mix jojoba, olive oil, coconut oil, and wheat germ into a bowl and heat for 1 minute or less. Distribute oil into the hair at night (wrap hair in a silk scarf) and after you wake. When you cannot mix your own hair concoction, go for higher end black hair products that have all natural ingredients in them like Proefectiv, Organic Root Stimulator, and Carol's Daughter.

Reduce heating and excessive chemical usage on your hair. Relaxers and dyes are a must to some Black women, and there is nothing wrong with that. Just consider the amount of time and care you must put into your hair heat and chemicals can be detrimental to the health of black hair if not maintained properly. Black hair growth in relaxed hair can grow just as well as with natural hair, but remember to keep in moisturized more often as relaxed hair can weaken and damage the hair follicles, contributing to permanent hair loss. Keep hair ends trimmed to prevent split ends which will prevent hair growth. Moisturize the hairs ends with protein based hair lotions to keep them from splitting.
