How to Grow and Care for a Cherry Tree

Cherries are something that all of us love and the best thing to do is to grow your own cherry tree in your backyard. If you to want to know how to grow a cherry tree, then just follow a few simple tips and you can have the best cherries in town.

Even a first timer can learn how to grow a cherry tree, as the gardening requirements are fairly simple. As any gardener will tell you, all that is needed is ample space and chilly frosty winters. If these conditions can be met, you can certainly grow healthy cherry trees in your own backyard.

It is important to take care of the planting time if you want to learn how to grow a cherry tree. The best season to plant may be summer in some regions and it may be fall in the other regions. So, you should ideally grow these trees during the spring or fall months. If you wish to plant seeds, then it is better to plant them during fall.

The planting site has to be prepared at the suggested time and you may take tips from your horticulturist. The planting area is very important, so choose a place that has ample sunlight and is well drained. If you plan to sow seeds get hold of good quality cherries and collect the seeds. Dry them out thoroughly. Prepare the soil bed for sowing the seeds. Make holes that are two inches deep and leave a gap of one foot between each of them. Sow the seeds and cover lightly with soil. They will germinate in spring and develop leaves. After they are about a foot in height, you can transplant these saplings. Alternatively you can purchase the plants directly and plant them.

Water the cherry tree properly during the first year until the roots spread thoroughly. You could use a fertilizer once every six months. Do not prune cherry trees during the first two years of its growth. It will take about three to five years for it to bear fruit.
