How to Grow and Care for Lucky Bamboo

Lauryn Page
Lucky Bamboo is a variety of tropical water lily, Dracaena Sanderiana, that grows freely in the rainforests of Africa and Southeast Asia. This plant makes a lovely gift for people with limited space or those without a green thumb. Due to its rapid growth and strength, growing bamboo is believed to be a symbol of luck and success. Several florists and gardening centers sell prepared arrangements that are quite affordable. For those with a flair for design, bamboo is sold either individually or in packets for creating an original arrangement. The stalks are bound with gold or red ribbon for extra fortune. Lucky Bamboo is grown hydroponically but can be grown in soil. Just be sure that soil is kept moist for an healthy plant. Choose an arrangement with healthy leaves that display a bright green color. Stalks should also be green with no yellowing. Lucky Bamboo arrangements usually come in a ceramic container or glass vase. Unless you are familiar with how to root plants, purchasing bamboo that has already grown roots is best. Lucky Bamboo arrangements can symbolize different types of luck relating to the ancient art of balancing the energy in your home, Feng Shui. Be sure to peruse the links below for more specific criteria about bamboo and Feng Shui.

Although Lucky Bamboo is a very hearty plant, it is not indestructible. Following a few rules and tips will ensure your plant will last for a long time. When bringing Lucky Bamboo home for the first time, place near a window where it will be close to but not directly in sunlight. Unless the water level low, allow the plant to adjust and do not refill for two to three days. Growing bamboo is easier in a ceramic or glass container. Rocks or marbles are included to provide stability to the stalks. Use filtered of distilled water and change at least every week. Tap water usually contains chemicals that do not agree with the root system of Lucky Bamboo. If you must use tap water, let water sit in an open container for 24 hours to allow chemicals to dissipate. Diluted plant food such as Miracle Gro® can be used sparingly every two months. The atmosphere for growing bamboo should be neutral - not too hot or too cold.

Glass vases filled with colorful rocks or marbles can be a beautiful showpiece around your home. However, glass cannot be placed in direct sunlight due to the possible growth of algae. Algae can also grow from using too much fertilizer. To save your Lucky Bamboo, wash plant stalks, container, and rocks or marbles with mild detergent and water. If the stalks have turned brown or mushy, the roots have rotted. One of the wonderful aspects of Lucky Bamboo is it's ability to regenerate. Cut any healthy tops and root the plant again. Lightly misting the tops of stalks encourages new leafy growth. No need to throw out the entire arrangement if only one stalk has died. Remove the stalk and the rest of the arrangement will not be affected. No matter what color your thumb is, caring for and growing Lucky Bamboo is a simple and fun experience.
