How to Grow Great Parsley

Cheryl Dennett
Parsley has been used for centuries as a decoration. Ancient Greeks used this herb in funeral ceremonies and grave wreaths. It was also used in wreaths given to athletes who won events in the early Olympics. This was because the Greeks believed Hercules had chosen parsley for his garlands. In modern times, parsley is used as a garland for many dishes. It is also used as an ingredient in recipes and as an herbal remedy. It is best when it is grown in your own garden. Here are some tips to help you grow great parsley in your home garden.

Most people think of parsley as a garland for steak or fish. But, it has so many more uses. It is an excellent addition to most recipes. It is also rich in vitamins, particularly A, C, calcium and iron. Parsley is a biennial, but is also grown as an annual. It will grow well in temperature zones 5 through 9. There are two varieties of parsley to choose from. They are curly leaf and flat-leaved. The flat-leaved variety is said to have a more intense flavor and is used more in cooking.

Parsley will grow best in soil that is rich, moist, and well-drained. It should be planted in full sun to partial shade. Sow the seeds when the soil temperature is above 50 degrees F. Do not be worried if you do not see parsley sprouts right away. This herb is very slow to germinate and usually takes at least 6 weeks before you can see any seedlings. To help speed this process a bit, soak the seeds in water overnight before you plant them in the soil. The seedlings should be thinned to about 8 inches apart.

You can begin harvesting parsley as soon as the plants are growing well and are established. Begin harvesting on the outer leaves and move inward. The plants will produce new growth throughout the growing season. You can dry or freeze parsley to have a supply throughout the winter months. It should be crushed by hand after it is completely dry. Store it in a container that is airtight.

Parsley has a gentle flavor. It works well at blending other flavors that are in the recipes with it. Both varieties are used in cooking. Parsley can be added to most foods, with the exception of sweets. It is especially tasty with salsa, tabbouleh, ham, grilled meats, and poultry. It will also spice up tomato juice.

It is a wonderful feeling to be able to harvest components of your recipes from your back yard or container garden. Herbs and vegetables taste better when they are fresh. Hopefully, these tips will help you grow great parsley for you and your family to enjoy.
