First you want to make sure that you have the right conditions. It is best to have a windowsill that faces south or southeast and gets about five hours of sun per day. Another thing that I would recommend is that your windowsill does not get too much draft.
Now go ahead and buy whatever herb you want to grow from a nursery. Next get a container that is about 6-12 inches deep. If you buy a wide long container you will be able to plant a variety of herbs in one container. If you want to just do individual herbs than just get a six inch pot.
When you are planting these herbs you want to use a soil less potting mix. The reason for this is because it is easier for your plants to develop an oils based disease. They should be more to the light side so that it can be well draining.
Next position your herbs in the container of your choices and fill up you pot with the potting mix. Now make sure that the mix is patted down filmy around your plant. Be sure not to fill up the pot all the way, leave it about an inch from the top open so that you have plenty of room for watering.
Herbs really don't like to sit in wet soil, so don't water them heavily. It is better to do some light sprinkling here and there. Once a month you will want to feed your plant some fertilizer to help keep it healthy and growing properly. Now you don't want to just use any fertilizer, you want to use a fertilizer that is labeled for use on edibles.
Now let me give you some tips that will help you grow healthy herbs. First, don't choose herb that will take up a lot space or grow too tall. The best herbs to choose that grow the perfect height are basil, chives, parsley, mint, lavender and thyme.
If your windowsill does not get a lot of sun light then you can put some fluorescent lights in you windowsill. Your light house is fairly close to your herbs. Your light should only be about 18 inches from your plants. Also, if you are going to be using this option then you will need to have your light off for 10 hours a day.
