How to Grow Orchids in Your Home

First you need to pick the right kind. Moth orchids or (Phalaenopsis) are one of the easiest orchids to grow. They are the least expensive, most common, and the longest blooming. Tilley flowers have shades of pink, red, white, yellow, purple, orange, and green. You can water either weekly or every other week. Find a spot where there is low, medium or bright light. Use fertilizer that is formulated for orchids. Keep them at temperatures between 50 to 75 F.

Dendrobium orchids are mostly seen in florist shops in bouquet. They come in colors of white, purple, green, and pink. They grow good in medium to bright light with temperatures of 50-70 F. Oncidium orchids are also called dancing lady orchids. They grow in clusters of 50 or more. They can be found in colors of white, red, purple, yellow, and pink. They will need medium to bright light while watering them either once a week or every other week. Temperature should be 50-75F.

Most orchids will produce flowers once a year. To get them to rebloom, you must give them enough light. Some of them do not need to have direct sunlight. Pretty much all orchids will grow in high humidity. You can grow in your bathroom or kitchen near your sink. To add more humidity set a pot of orchids on a tray of pebbles filled with water. Be careful not to give them too much water. This is a common reason why they will die. Orchids are not grown in potting mixes as other house plants. They need a lot of air therefore you should pot them in a bark mixture or sphagnum moss. The bark will dry out faster if you water them a lot, but the moss will hold moisture longer.

Display your orchids on a place where they can be seen like a stand or high place. Orchids weigh less than ordinary potted plants so they are easily to place on high places. Many of them have nice fragrances such as spicy, sweet, musky, and citrus. Some of them fragrant only during the evening hours. Plan for the size of your orchids because some are small enough to fit in a tea cup while some can grow as tall as 3 feet. Since orchids have a wide variety of colors you can match them with your décor. So enjoy your orchids regardless of the size or color you decide to use.
