How to Grow Peppers

Barb Jensen
No matter what your taste there is sure to be a pepper to suit you. Some are hot and some are sweet and if you grow your own peppers when you pick them will determine how hot or how sweet they will be.

Pepper plants can be started by seed or seedlings can be bought in garden centers. They like warmth so don't plant them outside until the soil is warm.

Pepper plants should be planted one foot apart. They like togetherness so when they are adults their leaves should be just barely touching the leaves of their neighbor.

Peppers can be picked when green or picked later when they turn red. If you are growing sweet peppers, the redder the pepper, the sweeter it will be. If you are growing hot peppers, the redder the pepper, the hotter it will be..

Peppers will stay fresh in the refrigerator for about two weeks. They also freeze nicely. Simply slice them and put them in a freezer container or freezer bag.

Red peppers are very easy to preserve. String them and hang them somewhere that is dry and airy.
