How-To Guide for Searching for Plane Tickets

Ryan Norris
Searching for plane tickets is a hassle for most people. Most folks search the Internet or use a travel agent, and still wind up paying too much for their air travel. So exactly how should you go about searching for airline tickets and finding the best deals on airfare?

First, the most important thing involved in finding the best deals for airfares is to realize what a great price looks like. If you are unsure what the best prices look like then how will you know when you see one? The easy answer is that you won't, and therefore you will struggle to effectively book the best deals. Typically, the best deals for regional or same-time-zone flights bottom out around $225. Cross country flights typically bottom out around $300. These bottom line deals aren't extremely common; however, they are out there and can be found with a little legwork. So, the next time you see prices such as these you will know that you are most likely looking at the best possible deal. These deals usually don't last long and can change within an hour of posting, so identifying the great deals and booking them right away is a key factor in booking plane tickets.

Next, it's important to understand what factors affect the prices of airfare and to use those factors to your advantage. Airfares typically range in value depending upon several important factors such as: hub city location/proximity, distance, number of flights available. The location of your travel is important because different airlines have different hub cities. For example, a person in Charlotte, NC wanting to travel to Philadelphia, PA would find better airfare deals with US Airways because Charlotte and Philadelphia are both hub cities for US Airways. Whereas, booking a flight from Charlotte to Philadelphia would be far more expensive if it were booked with Delta Airlines for these particular cities. Be sure to research on the Internet and discover each airlines hub cities. Here are a few:

US Airways: Charlotte, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh

Delta: Atlanta

American Airlines: Miami and Chicago

Northwest Airlines: Detroit and Memphis

Continental: Houston and Newark

Another helpful step in finding great airfare deals is being patient. Be flexible with your travel time and don't be in a hurry to arrive. It's a great idea to use connections to your advantage. Connecting flights generally add an additional two hours to your travel time. However, the advantage you gain from connecting through hub cities is that you save more money. In most cases, the savings advantage out weighs the disadvantage of having to wait. Another great option to use when you search for flights online is the flexible travel option. Shifting your scheduled travel forward or backward by as little as one day can keep your travel costs to a minimum and save your tons of cash. A great rule of thumb is that having a Saturday night stay-over will take around $40 to $50 off your average priced ticket. Flying on business days such as Monday and Wednesday will surely cost you extra, so carefully select your travel days and consider shifting your travel by a day or two. If you are flexible enough you can use bidding sites such as Priceline. With cheap airfares, timing is everything. Either book it extremely early or extremely late. The highest fares typically occur around two weeks before the flights.

So when searching for the cheapest airfare deals remember to know what a great deal looks like, use hub cities to your advantage, understand the timing intricacies involved with purchasing plane tickets. If you follow these simple steps and understand the patience involved with purchasing plane tickets at great fare rate, then you will have success when looking for great fares for your next trip.
