How Habitat for Humanity Works

Habitat for humanity makes it possible for families to be able to afford decent housing. It is a Christian organization where people work together for the better of everyone involved in the program. This is not a free housing project. It is a project that allows those who will live in the home to help build their home, help pay for their home and help others in return as well. Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976 and has grown to an international level today.

How habitat for humanity works:

1. Donations- Donations are made to habitat for humanity in the form of human labor, building materials and monetary gifts. This allows the entire project to work as well as it does. Without people donating time, money and materials, the project would not have made it off the ground.

2. The homes- The homes that habitat for humanity works on are either new homes or refurbishing old homes to make them livable. The homes are then sold to the people who have applied for the aid. The new owners pay habitat for humanity for the homes and the funds are then used to help other families.

3. The loans- The loans that families obtain for these homes are affordable and the houses are sold without any profit to anyone. The payments on the loans are as low as possible for that reason.

4. Selection of homeowners- There are various factors in regards to how people are chosen as homeowners of habitat houses. They have to be able to pay the loan back for starters. Other parts of the selection process include the actual need of the family for a decent home and whether or not they are willing to become a part of the project to help themselves and others.

5. Volunteer workers- You do not have to be a candidate for a home in order to help with the building projects. You only have to be someone who is interested in helping others. 6. Contact- If you are interested in volunteering, would like to apply for help or would like other information about the program, you can do so by visiting the Habitat for Humanity website. They also have paid positions for those who might be interested. This is an international organization that was developed to give hope and ability to those who would otherwise be left in subpar housing and/or homeless.

Habitat for Humanity is an organization that aids people in not only getting what they need, but teaching them how to fend for themselves. It's not about giving hand outs. It's about giving hand ups. Giving a man a fish will feed him for a day. Teaching him how to fish will feed him for a lifetime. Habitat for Humanity gives people hope. It is run as a Christian organization that believes teaching others to take care of themselves is just as important as giving them a helping hand when they need it.
