How to Get Your Hair to Hold a Curl Without Causing Damage

Helping Your Hair to Hold a Curl

Rosa Hayes
Curling irons can do wonders to make straight hair curly but sometimes the curls won't hold and we don't know what to do. I do a lot of hair practicing on my kid's head to see what works and what doesn't. I would do my hair experiments on my own head but I can't really see the back of it. Making a curling iron work for you can be easy but it is harder to get the curls to stay in your hair once you are done.

The methods that I use consist of applying a few hair products to your hair. I don't recommend using a curling iron or hair products very often since it can be bad for your hair but every now and then won't do much harm.

Products that volumize and hold can do a lot of miracle work for hair that won't hold a curl. I have found that hair mouse is actually better for your hair and can do just the same as hair spray. Mouse is actually better since it usually won't leave the white residue that hair spray often does. I read in a magazine once that mouse is great for hair that is fine or delicate so if your hair falls into this category then you might want to consider mouse.

Thicker hair has a lot of problems with the curls not even staying in soon after you using a curling iron on it. For thicker hair you can use different creams to get it to hold in place. There are many creams that are made to hold curls in place without all the stickiness or crunching that many products produce.

I know that I said that I don't recommend hair spray but if you want your hair to take a curl better then you might want to try spraying a little bit in your hand and smearing it onto the areas that you want to curl. I don't use the hair spray that comes in the aerosol cans but instead prefer to use hairspray in the bottle.

Try to not mix and match your hair products. This is probably some of the best advice that any hair stylist can give you and it is something that I have heard many times for good reason. Hair products such as hairspray, mousse, conditioner, and shampoo are all made to make your hair better and are made to go with each other. Since the products are made for each other they will often work better when used together.

Another tip that I can give you that will help your hair from all the damage that you may be doing to it is to wash your hair as soon as possible to get all the chemicals out. I would also use hair products that will repair the hair after using harsh products on them.

I have the opposite problem. I wish I could straighten my hair more easily and quickly. A friend recently spent three hours trying to straighten my hair!
