How to Use Hairspray to Keep Clip-In Hair Extensions from Slipping Out

Katrina J.
If you have fine or thin hair and you like to wear clip in hair extensions, you may find that the hair extensions tend to slip out. This is especially true if your hair is more smooth than coarse. The good news is that you don't have to stop wearing clip in hair extensions just because your hair is fine or thin or smooth. Keeping clip in hair extensions from slipping out of your hair is a very simple process that starts when you put the clip-in hair extensions in. The process is easy and takes only a few extra short minutes. Here's what to do:

Here is what you'll need to have on hand:

Aerosol holding spray.

Rattail comb or fine tooth comb.

One large hair clip.

Hair extensions with clips sewn in.

1. Make a part in the hair 3 inches above the nape of the neck, going from left to right. Use a large hair clip to separate the rest of the hair and keep it out of the way.

2. Hold the aerosol hairspray about 3 inches away from head directly over roots of the section of hair that was parted. Lightly and evenly spray across the entire length of the part

3. Using the rattail comb, gently back comb the hair, starting about 1 inch away from the roots. Be careful not to be too rough with the hair, which can cause damage. Be sure to back comb or tease the hair quickly before the hairspray dries. The goal is to create a thick patch of hair in which to insert the combs of the clip and extensions.

4. Next, hold the clip in hair extensions with the clip facing the scalp and hair facing out. Starting on the left side (if you're right-handed), push the comb down behind the thickest part of the teased hair. Continue to insert the combs while moving from left to right until the entire weft of hair has been inserted.

5. Repeat the same process of putting the hair, each time making the part about 1 inch higher than last until you have applied as much air as you desire.

Applying the clip in hair extensions in this way will allow you to move your head freely and style your hair in the same way you would be able to if you are wearing only your natural hair. It's best if you don't leave the clip in hair extensions and overnight. It is also advisable that you wash the hairspray out of your hair each day. To avoid damaging your thin fine here, do not try to comb through the hair that was back teased.
